Melrose Rugby Football Club

Melrose RFC was founded in 1877 and is known world wide as being the birthplace of seven a side rugby. The first tournament took place in 1883 and was the idea of Melrose butcher Ned Haig.
The home ground - The Greenyards - is widely accepted as one of the best appointed and most picturesque of pitches in the world, nestling as it does in the shadow of the Eildon Hills. The Melrose Club has produced 22 International players, the current club coach, Craig Chalmers, having the most caps(60). Keith Robertson with 44 is the next most capped player. The club's most successful period was during the 90's under the tutelage of Jim Telfer and Rob Moffat. The Championship was won in 90,92,93,95,96 and culminating in 97 when the Cup, Border League and Melrose Sevens titles were all added in the same season.
Melrose RFC is keen to promote the Sevens game by hosting a yearly International tournament. Sevens is played world wide, has an international series and features in the Commonwealth Games.
